A Day in the Life of Cottage Industry Legs

Did you wake up this morning and wonder how steel table legs are made? Good news! We’re going to show a day in the life of a set of Cottage Industry table legs.

1. To start, we source all of our steel from local companies, which allows us to create a relationship and purchase in bulk.  The raw steel enters our shop as 20 foot long sticks.  On any given day, we can have enough steel on hand for 6-18 months of fabrication.

 2. With a list of orders in hand, we cut the steel to size. Because let’s face it - if we left the steel at 20 feet long, we’d end up with table legs for giants.

3. After cutting, we move to the drill press.  Each set of legs comes with pre-drilled holes in the top of the leg, as well as the mounting hardware, for easy attachment to the table top.

4. Then the steel needs a proper sanding & cleaning to get it into tip-top shape for a smooth finishing process.

5. Once sufficiently clean, it’s time to bend. Equipped with jigs and geometry, we bend the long stick of steel into a leg that is the exact dimensions (height, width) given by the customer.

6. The shaped leg is now prepped for finishing with one last wipe down.  Each leg comes standard in a powder coat finish, which is a very durable and an environmentally friendly finish. Once the powder coat is applied, it is baked at 400* to cure.

7. After proper cooling time, the legs are ready to be packaged and shipped to the customer.

We love working with our customers to get the perfect set of Cottage Industry legs for their project. Our day is made when customers send us pictures of their finished product.
